the most famous

The old pond--
a frog jumps in,
sound of water.
-Matsuo Basho

This is probably the most famous haiku in the world, ever. Ever. Why?

  1. I've never actually heard this haiku before, and to me it's not very noteworthy, so it's a mystery to me why it's so famous.

  2. I actually haven't heard of this haiku before, but perhaps it's well-known because of its unifying simplicity?--short terse phrases, single-syllable words, all combining to capture one simple (and mundane) image. The haiku turns this everyday event of a frog jumping in the water into a very memorable picture (tableau-like, perhaps?)

  3. I like your project. If I found a poem on my napkin it would make my day better. However, I've never heard of this haiku, but I like it. Good luck stamping!

  4. I've never heard of this poem either, actually.

I find this poem very clean and simple, which is nice. Haiku sometimes try to put something really deep and meaningful into such a short space, so I like that this poem stays a simple poem.
