The old pond--
a frog jumps in,
sound of water.
-Matsuo Basho
This is probably the most famous haiku in the world, ever. Ever. Why?

This is a public poetry project designed to engage the community in the discussion and appreciation of haiku poetry. Feel free to browse the various poems, some of which you may have found on napkins in your community. Also, please engage in the dialogue by answering the questions that accompany the haikus that most affect you.
I've never actually heard this haiku before, and to me it's not very noteworthy, so it's a mystery to me why it's so famous.
ReplyDeleteI actually haven't heard of this haiku before, but perhaps it's well-known because of its unifying simplicity?--short terse phrases, single-syllable words, all combining to capture one simple (and mundane) image. The haiku turns this everyday event of a frog jumping in the water into a very memorable picture (tableau-like, perhaps?)

I like your project. If I found a poem on my napkin it would make my day better. However, I've never heard of this haiku, but I like it. Good luck stamping!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of this poem either, actually.
ReplyDeleteI find this poem very clean and simple, which is nice. Haiku sometimes try to put something really deep and meaningful into such a short space, so I like that this poem stays a simple poem.
